My business can’t get FTTP – what should I do?

When it comes to different broadband connections for your business, FTTP is repeatedly cropping up as one of the best options out there. Lightning fast. Modern. Reliable. What’s not to like?

A quick summary

If you aren’t up to speed with what FTTP is, we’ve got an entire blog here to bring you up to speed. Or if you’d prefer a whistlestop tour, here are the main points you need to know:

• FTTP is a fully fibre broadband connection – no copper wires are involved.

• This means connection speeds are far higher than broadband still relying on copper cabling (known as FTTC).

• Fibre optic cables are much more reliable than copper cabling – the latter were originally created for landline services and were later adapted for broadband. This means they wear down over time. Fibre optic, on the other hand, was specially made for carrying internet data, which makes them much more durable.

• More and more businesses who are seeking a strong, reliable broadband connection are switching to FTTP.

But there is a catch…

Accessibility

While more and more businesses are keen to use FTTP, not all of them can have it. That’s because FTTP is only available in certain areas of the UK, particularly major towns and cities.

If you aren’t sure whether FTTP is an option in your area, get in touch and we will find out for you.

As FTTP gains more attention (and users) it will be introduced across more areas of the UK. But in the meantime, this isn’t too helpful for you.

So, what’s the alternative?

A leased line

If you’re drawn to FTTP because you know it offers strong, fast, and reliable broadband, there is another option that ticks all these boxes – and is widely accessible across the UK. A leased line is also fully fibre, but the key difference is that it’s a private line just for your business. You can find out more about leased lines here.

SoGEA

Another potential option is Single Order Generic Ethernet Access, more commonly known as SoGEA. This is a relatively new form of broadband service that takes your internet and your telephone line and neatens them down into one efficient, smooth system. You can find out more about what this is and how it works here

Keep an ear out

According to Ofcom, the government is working to have 85% of UK homes and businesses connected to gigabit-capable internet by the end of 2025. As this happens, you can bet that FTTP will become more readily available. So, it’s worth keeping an eye on broadband updates in your area. After all, if you want your business to be performing at its best, being aware of what resources are accessible to you is key.

However, we know that life can get busy. If you’re balancing a business with life and leisure, as well as all the other things that build up during the day… who’s got time to be checking broadband options?
