What is SoGEA and why should my business care about it?

In a perfect world, running a business would be smooth sailing all day every day. But staying efficient and keeping overheads at a manageable level can be an uphill battle – especially in today’s economic climate.

However, there is one way that you can massively improve your business’s communications and it will also save you money. Say hello to SoGEA.

What is SoGEA?

Single Order Generic Ethernet Access – more commonly known as SoGEA – might sound like a mouthful, but it’s actually nice and easy to get your head around. This relatively new form of broadband service is all about making your telephone and internet system as simple and effective as possible.

You see, all businesses used to need two main lines – one for your telephone and one for your internet. But with SoGEA, it’s all managed under the same, highspeed broadband system.

Future-proofing your business

We’ve been banging on about it for a while now (and rightly so) but by 2025 all traditional landlines will be phased out. You can find out more about that here but in a nutshell, what this means is all those copper telephone cables are being replaced with a newer system called VoIP.

VoIP involves taking calls over the internet rather than using a classic analogue phone line. And the good news? SoGEA supports VoIP. So, in other words, by moving over to SoGEA, your business can enter the new telephone era already prepped and good to go.

Using a VoIP telephone system opens your business up to more advantages, such as increased reliability and flexibility for remote teams. You can find out more about that here.

 Is SoGEA cheaper?

Using SoGEA means you no longer need a direct telephone line. That’s one less thing to worry about – and one less thing to pay for. So, typically, SoGEA is a much cheaper option for businesses.

A reliable option for your business

Openreach has stated that SoGEA is 50% faster to install than traditional phone systems. And once it’s in place, it tends to be much easier to manage. Think about it: having one simple, dedicated line for your internet and telephone means less systems to go wrong. And if you ever do have issues, you aren’t going to get stuck between one supplier and another, trying to communicate back and forth as you desperately work to get your systems up and running again. Everything is in one, secure place.

Can all businesses use SoGEA?

SoGEA doesn’t use any new infrastructure – it just makes use of a system that already exists. This means it’s widely available across a vast majority of the UK. However, if you aren’t sure, just get in touch with us and we can check for you.

A heads up though: if your business currently uses an analogue line for other things, such as a fax system or alarms, you’ll need to find an alternative for these before you make the switch to SoGEA.
