BTs ISDN Switch Off Inches Closer – What Can Your School Do About It?

When we first started talking about the ISDN switch off in 2025, it seemed like a LONG way away.  But here we are, just two years out from that looming deadline and the reality is that if your school is currently using multiple phone lines on the traditional network, you’re probably going to need to change systems.  A great option for schools is to switch to a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) system – it’s hard working, flexible and can save some money along the way.

Here’s what school managers should be asking about the switch off and the significant benefits of switching to a VoIP system:

Why is the switch off happening?

In short, the advancement of broadband technology has rendered older, traditional ISDN lines outdated. BT plans to move towards the newer tech of fibre for both voice calls and data, the switch off is the next step in the journey.

How does this affect our school?

If you’re still relying on a traditional phone system, you will need to invest in future compatibility or revamp your system altogether, switching to VoIP. From 2023, BT will stop selling new traditional lines altogether, change is coming – it’s far better to be ahead of it.

What are the main benefits of our school switching to VoIP?

Besides being far more efficient, VoIP also offers significant cost savings on the traditional system.  In fact some schools and businesses can save up to 40% on call costs compared to their previous system.

The new technology also means the costs of adding phone lines, as well as the costs of making calls, will all get reduced. If you consider how much you could save over the next few years rather than waiting, then the decision to make the move now becomes something of a no-brainer.

Is a VoIP system really going to change our communications that much?

In short: yes! Compared with a traditional system:

1. VoIP has fantastic call handling features — hunt groups, auto assistant, easy transferring, automated receptions and emergency messages are among them.
2. As your business grows, adding new lines and numbers with VoIP is easier and cheaper than traditional systems.
3. With VoIP, conference and video calls can be available at the touch of a button.
4. When you plug your VoIP phone in to a data connection anywhere across the globe it retains the same phone number —which is great in an age of increasingly flexible working.

How does my internet connection affect VoIP?

VoIP is already suitable for the majority of internet connections across the country.  If your school’s internet is currently slow, we can recommend upgrades for you but the chances are, in our increasingly technological age, that your school internet system will handle VoIP just fine.
