Why is VoIP cheaper for my business?

It comes as no surprise that businesses, in all shapes and forms, want to keep their costs as manageable as possible. There are a lot of overheads to consider – from payroll, to buying stock, to renting office space – but something that’s easy to overlook is your telephone line. Yes, you might use it every day. Yes, you might have had the same telephone system for years and years. But if you’re looking to reduce costs this year, we’d recommend taking a closer look at your old phone system. There might be some better, and cheaper, upgrades out there.

Entering the new era for telephones

The Equations team have been talking about this for a while now, but for those of you who don’t know, the traditional telephone system that the UK has lived with for decades is coming to an end in 2025. All those copper wires that connect one phone user to another are on their way out. Instead, they’re being replaced with an all together more modern system in which everything is done over the internet:  VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).

So, if you want your business to keep on rolling in 2025, you need to prepare to move over to VoIP. But there is another reason why you should care: VoIP has the potential to be much cheaper for your business. In fact, businesses that have already switched over to VoIP have reported savings of as much as 80% on recurring costs. Not bad, right?

But why is VoIP cheaper than a traditional landline?

Installing a VoIP phone system may not involve adding any new, fancy infrastructure to your business. VoIP uses the tools your business already has: the internet. All you need to do is connect your VoIP enabled phone into your existing network cabling and away you go. The installation can be a lot cheaper simply because you aren’t having to add any new cables.

Equally, the maintenance often is cheaper too. With VoIP, if your phone system goes down, a technician won’t need to fiddle around with copper cables and switchboards.  Instead, you’ll generally find issues are much smoother to fix – which will often make them less costly.

You’re likely to find that actually making calls is cheaper too. Calls on the older type of lines have a charge for most calls whereas many of Equations VoIP calls are free.

A full package

By using the latest technology, everything is kept neatly in one place and will likely be cheaper too.

No added costs as you grow

Another benefit of using VoIP is that you can add as many team members to this system as you like. Rather than having to install (and pay for) additional extension cards at your business, all you need is a new handset, a user license and an active data connection and you’re ready to go.

So, what next?

As the 2025 deadline for the older type exchange line switch off gets closer, we expect many businesses to leave switching to the very last minute.  Undoubtedly as engineers get busier and the timeframe shortens, the costs associated with switching to VoIP will increase. Make sure you’re ahead of the rush!
