Are VoIP systems secure?

With the ever-increasing popularity of the internet and thus the rise of cybercrime, one of the biggest concerns we hear about VoIP is that it isn’t secure enough. So is that really true? The short answer is that VoIP systems are secure as long as you follow VoIP best practices and regularly review your security, exactly as you would other areas of your business.

What are VoIP security best practices?

Strong password

Many VoIP phones require a password to be used, so ensure it is a strong one. Aim for a password that is at least 10 characters long and includes numbers, capitals and special characters. You can also set up two-factor authentication as well as make a note of regularly changing your passwords. This may seem tedious, but it greatly increases your online security and ensures only authorised users can access your system.

Update your system regularly

Another task that may seem like a bit of a hassle but is very important, is updating your system regularly, which ensures you have the newest and therefore the strongest security updates. This is increasingly true for VoIP phone system providers as they regularly update software to protect against new forms of cyberattacks. So, make sure you pay attention to those update notifications and that all devices you’re using get updated too.

Monitor your call logs

Keep an eye on your call logs and go through them regularly for any calls that look unusual or are out of normal hours. This early detection can make a huge difference so try to do this at least once a month but preferably weekly if possible.

Get remote employees to use a VPN

As remote or hybrid working becomes increasingly the norm, the importance of security at home offices cannot be understated. To avoid stumbling into any security issues, make sure your team is required to use a VPN for all at home usage. A VPN will protect their internet activity from external sources so there is no risk of an unsecured WiFi network creating problems for your business.

Educate your staff

It is so important that your staff understand not just how to use the systems correctly but are also made aware of security threats. Make sure your staff know what to look for and are aware of any blocked lines, as well as regularly updating any devices they take home with them. A single device could cause problems across your system so it’s important everyone understands their security responsibilities.
