New to VoIP? Here’s everything you need to know!

Whether you’ve been prompted by the 2025 conventional analogue and ISDN lines switching off date creeping ever closer or have been pushed into considering new ways of working as a result of the last couple of years, now might be a great time to switch your traditional phone system over to something new, agile, flexible.  But where to begin?

Installing a VoIP system is one of the key ways to future proof your business but don’t take our word for it – if you’re new to VoIP, here’s everything we think you need to know!

What is VoIP?

Let’s start at the very beginning, VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol and it allows you to make phone calls over a data connection rather than using a regular landline or mobile network.  VoIP converts your calls into digital signals before sending them over your data connection. Nifty!

Is it here to stay?

It really is! In fact, when BT Openreach switch off the traditional phone line network in two years’ time, all phone calls in the UK will be made over a data connection.  There’s likely to be a rush on switching as businesses leave upgrading to the very last minute.  Switching to a VoIP system now could save your business a lot of hassle rather than waiting until you’re forced into making the move.

Will all of my phone numbers change?

No! The great thing is that we should be able to move your existing telephone numbers onto a brand new VoIP system without exposing your customers to any disruption or downtime.

Why should I make the switch?

First of all, once the system is installed, using VoIP for your business communications is significantly cheaper than using traditional phone lines. In some cases businesses have saved as much as 80% on recurring costs. You could also save on international calls if these are destinations you call.

VoIP allows maximum flexibility for your staff, really important at a time when you’re likely to be dealing with more staff working from home or out of the office.  Your team can simply take their VoIP handset home with them and plug into a broadband router to recreate their office at home! They’ll have access to your business network as though they were in the office and customers will still be able to use the same numbers to reach them seamlessly.

The quality of a VoIP system does not diminish as more users are added. So if you need lots of staff to be making lots of calls, VoIP is better quality and far cheaper than trying to install new phonelines. In fact, if you’re experiencing fluctuations in your staffing – whether due to seasonal or economic factors – all your new team members need is a handset and phone number to get up and running. It’s quicker, easier and cheaper than it has ever been to onboard new staff.

Are there any downsides?

There’s really only one downside to a VoIP system and that is that the call quality could diminish if you have a particularly poor broadband connection, something that is incredibly unlikely in this digitally advanced age.
